Interactives

As part of the Emerging tech team at USA TODAY, I designed interactive media for web and mobile devices. These interactives explored spatial 3D web, narrative audio, and tech to support assisted device journalism.

Web Interactive media

Using react and Three.js I created a web experience that showcased explorative interaction and narration about the environmental waste impacts on the boarder of Mexico and California, and the unseen consequences of heavy particle emissions. This project was recognized with multiple awards, including the Edward R. Murrow Award for “Excellence in Innovation”.
Leveraging the tech behind our AR platform, I designed a series of interactive tours for sports media, about the Miami Grand Prix course, and the integration of sports betting into stadiums. This format was built as a two tiered style for web and on the AR platform to engage with a wider audience, and for additional integration into our sports coverage. To work in the web based format, we adjusted the interactions to work in scrolling format, which queued scrubbing through video renders of the 3D scene, pressing on POIs would also queue and advance the video.

Narrative Audio

We are Breonna was an audio focused experience were I worked closely with a community of journalists to interview and aggregate recordings of black women in America sharing their thoughts and experiences after Breonna Taylor's death. This experience was designed to be open ended for the user, as we wanted them to take their time and listen to these women one by one. We did not want to bundle this into chapters so any of their voices would be missed.
I also worked on internal tools to bring new tech to streamline journalism. Bytecast was an audio first format for journalists to quickly connect with their audiences through home assistance devices and social media. This platform provided an audio recording, editing, staging, and publishing tool for journalists to quickly cover audio first news.
